Upon hearing the exciting news about Sigyn and my engagement, my good friend Fafnir the dwarf insisted on taking me out for a night of bachelor party fun. As everyone knows, dwarves and dogs both love to dig, so we started out the night with some good ol' fashioned digging. We dug and dug and dug to our hearts content until we suddenly discovered an underground cave full of treasure! There was so much there that Fafnir said he didn't see the harm in taking some. I said I didn't think that was a very good idea - I saw Pirates of the Caribbean when I was living on Midgard and was pretty sure nothing good can come from taking gold of unknown origin. However, Fafnir (who has not seen Pirates of the Caribbean) insisted that everything would be fine and slipped a few gold coins and some precious gemstones into his pocket. We then headed off on our merry way to get a few drinks at the local pub.
We drank the night away as I shared the full story of my time on Midgard with my Cotton and my bro Michael, my bittersweet return to Asgard, how I met Sigyn, and our engagement. He caught me up on all of his mining adventures, include his narrow escape from a bunch of giant spiders deep in a mountain. We laughed and cried and laughed again. After about six rounds of drinks, we decided we probably should call it a night. Fafnir insisted on paying - he had all that stolen gold in his pocket after all, so he said it only seemed right.
Fafnir walked up to the bar, took the gold coins out of his pocket, and attempted to hand them over to the bartender. I watched in confusion as Fafnir reached out his hand, the bartender attempted to take the gold, and then Fafnir abruptly jerked his hand away. This happened two more times, and the bartender was becoming enraged.
"Fafnir, what are you doing?" I asked.
He replied, "I don't know! Each time I try to hand over the gold my hand moves of its own accord! I don't know what's going on...also...I don't feel so good..."
"No worries - I can pay for - "
Before I could finish my sentence, Fafnir began to grow and contort. His skin began to turn into scales. He sprouted a tail...then wings...and then horns! All as he continued to grow larger and larger, right in the middle of the bar. His horned head busted through the roof of the bar, and his expanding wings and tail knocked over drinks, tables, chairs, and other patrons. I watched the bartender dive behind the bar. I had no doubt he was looking for some means to defend agains t helarge dragon that suddenly had materialized in his fine establishment.
"Fafnir, I don't know what's going on, but we might want to get out of here..."
Fafnir looked down at me, eyes wide with fear and confusion. He quickly composed himself and nodded. I ran out the door, and he clumsily followed, destroying what was left of the bar and demolishing the wall as he escaped. The bartender and patrons were not far behind, wielding swords, spears, table legs - really anything they could find to use as a weapon. I made myself larger so I could match Fafnir's speed. We ran and ran and ran, barrelling through trees and fountains. I even accidentally knocked the sword hand off an old statue of Tyr.
Our pursuers had no chance of catching us. We paused to regroup.
"I think that gold may have been cursed," Fafnir remarked. "Maybe if I take it back to the cave I'll turn back into my old self?"
"It's worth a shot," I replied. So, we decided to head back to the cave. Upon arriving at the cave, we suddenly realized that all of Fafnir's clothes were destroyed during the transformation...including the pockets that held the stolen treasure.
Fafnir sighed, "That treasure is long gone by now - I'm sure between the bartender and the other patrons who were around it's scattered to the four winds. I guess I'm a dragon now." He shrugged. He took a moment to survey his surroundings and began admiring himself in a particularly shiny gold vase. "You know, this is actually pretty awesome! I can fly, I love mountains and can live in a great cave, and there's no reason to worry about taking this treasure now, so I can take as much as I want and be set for life!"
I beamed. "That's true! I'll even help you find the perfect new home. You're in charge of carrying all the treasure though."
We set off to search for a perfect home for Fafnir. We found him a beautiful mountain cave overlooking a waterfall. Over the next week or so, I helped him get set up with everything he could possibly need, including the Valkyrie meal delivery service so he could still enjoy the drinks and meals that he loves without destroying every restaurant he entered. Then, one day, a tabloid cover caught my eye. It depicted a ferocious wolf and a huge dragon wreaking havoc. I of course had to purchase it and immediately go over to Fafnir's to see what it said.
We laughed as we read all about how a greedy dwarf turned into a massive dragon in the middle of town, how a giant wolf tore through Asgard and bit off the hand of Tyr for attempting to restrain him, and how the dragon now lurks about ready to destroy anyone who attempts to take even one piece of his gold.
Since then, the story has spread across Asgard like wildfire - and Fafnir continues to enjoy his beautiful cave in the mountains. I have to say that my bachelor party was truly legendary.
